What a difference six years makes…

For some reason, I have the bug, and by bug, I mean I really want to know how to draw. I want to be able to draw quickly on location, including moving people, as Urban Sketchers do. I want to do faces. I want to be able to draw not just a dog but this dog. I don’t know why I want to do this so much. I guess that’s why they call it a passion.

Not there yet, but I’ve come a long way! Compare this version of my beloved Poppy in 2015 to the version I drew after she passed, in April of 2021. One main difference was that I now know to use a photo reference, and to not try to draw something from memory or intuition. Artists consult many photo references for their pieces if they are not on location.

And, a sweet fellow artist friend saved a birthday card I gave her in 2015, and sent a photo of it with the one I gave her this year.

Obviously you can see the improvement! And yet, she loved the first one just as much. (Even now, a few years later, I see where I could add more darkest darks to the more recent version - such as on the table under the cupcake, a little more contrast where the liner meets the cake, and maybe in hump of frosting. The learning is never ending!)

Keep on trucking! Every drop of water in the bucket continues our progress.
